Florist Meeting #1

>> Thursday, January 8, 2009

So I can cross another thing off my list! I had my first florist meeting yesterday. I know I initially blogged that I would be doing my centerpieces DIY with calla lilies that I would order online. Well after speaking with my sister and friends they scared me. What if my flowers arrived dead? What if they are not open? What if the wrong flowers arrive? So after accessing all of that I figured that I would set a very small wedding budget for flowers, which we have room for because my mom is paying for our cake.

I decided to use an inexpensive yet pretty flower: the white carnation. If used the correct way this flower can look elegant and classy. I will share more about the design later. I also decided to add some callas in the mix as well, in the low centerpieces. It will not be as many as I initially wanted but it will keep the costs down. Also to keep costs down I will use my own vases and cut my own bamboo from my property. Also the aisle decorations will become my centerpices in the reception area, and the mantle decorations from the ceremony will be moved to decorate the cake table and sweetheart table!

The florist is WONDERFUL, he is very knowledgeable. I went armed with lots of questions and he answered each one with no problems. He just opened his business 2 weeks ago so that’s a plus. His prices will probably be very affordable since he needs to build his portfolio. He is working up a proposal for me, so I will share once I get it. I will still meet with Florist #2 in March because I don’t want to jump on the first train rolling; I need to weigh my options.

YAY! Congratulations! How exciting. I wouldn't worry too much about it looking elegant. You have great taste and I'm sure once you and your florist finalize the look, it'll be gorgeous. Carnations truly don't get the credit it deserves.

Congrats on your floral decision! It sounds like it will be gorgeous!! And you are smart to weigh your options with florists. I jumped at the chance to hire the first florist we met with. He was great, but we are still looking. But it sounds like the guy you met with is a wonderful possibility!

I am planning to go the white carnation route myself at this point, too. They look so pretty bunched together and the price can't be beat!

Carnations are the best for the budget bride. Lots of stems and no greenery showing. They'll be beautiful! And will save you the stress of doing the centerpieces yourself. :)

Not to put you off carnations you are right they can be beautiful... but if your heart was set on calla lilies, let me tell you as a florist, they are one of the easiest flowers to arrange simply. They are also a flower that will hold up well for a few days if kept cool, which means you have time to let them open up,if they're not already. I've never had bad ones delivered to me. You can order them in bulk even from Sam's Club online and lots of other places on the internet. That said... I would still recommend having a florist do your personals to alieviate stress on the day of... but if you are trying to save money I think callas are hard to mess up. good luck with whatever you decide.
